They're foods that are generated around a particular functional ingredient - for example foods containing pro-and pre-biotics like kefir and sauerkraut. The correct terminology is 'foods that deliver enhanced benefits over and above their basic nutritional value', so deliver real benefits in health terms.

Basically the gut microbiome consists of trillions of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi etc) and they all play a different role in your body. If they are imbalanced they may be the cause of your symptoms.
